6.4.2011: Skagaströnd: Fisherman's Festival

 Today is the Fisherman's Festival.
It is a very old festival, and has been celebrated for centuries.
The morning started with a parade from the harbor to the church, where they held a Fisherman's Mass. Then, we hoped to go on a boat ride, but it was too windy. So, next was fun and games.
They started with rowing races...

And then a good bunch of silliness!

 Honored men.

 And then more entertainment...

So, they swung on the rope to the orange tented raft. (The trick was making into the opening on the right side. If not, into the water they went! Brr!) Then, they had to jump into a plastic container and pull themselves to the next raft, climb onto the dock, then walk over the black barrels. After a couple people made it all the way across the barrels without falling, the rescue guys added a little soap to liven things up a bit. Quite a few folks got a soaking. Brr!

After that, was cake! And, more cake! And, even more cake! Tasty goodness! (The photos below do not, in any way, do justice to the splendid table. It was packed with all sorts of amazing casseroles and tons of desserts.)

Next up, the dance at 11pm. I've heard rumors it is quite the shindig.
There may be more photos to come... although, it might just be that what happens in Skagaströnd, stays in Skagaströnd...(ala, Las Vegas...) We will see what the evening brings...

(By the way, all the money from today's festivities helps fund the all volunteer rescue squad!)
