A little late-night reading. As I was reading this part, I thought- hey that's what I used to tell my drawing students! Let go of your assumptions about what an apple or a tree or a face looks like, and just observe. Find the positive and negative spaces, and the light and shadow, and where things meet, and the draw them. (By the way, the book is People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.)
